rev jeremiah wright spoke today at the national press club. i was able to catch the majority of it live.
last night he spoke to the naacp. claiming he is not 'divisive' but 'descriptive'.
rev jeremiah wright has taken quite a few critiques since his eyebrow raising comments which generally have been taken out of context of his entire sermon which has come be known as "god damn america".
unfortunately pop culture media, youtube for example, only provides us with soundbytes. unfortunately again, so many of us judge in entirety, a person due to a 25 second soundbyte. thats us folks...thats american. if the entire sermon would be heard...the context would be apparent. wright said "god damn the american church because she thinks she is god".case in point

I believe that there is more truth in his "divisive" and "hateful" speech than most "evangelical" pastors, such as Pat Robertson, that preach "love" and "unity" and "freedom". Sure what he says is meant to stir people up. But maybe thats what we need right now. I think we've been playing nice for to long. Don't get me wrong, I don't agree with everything he says, but at least listen to what he has to say. Hannity barely lets him form a complete sentence without an interjection.
He is playing the prophet (in the good sense) and America doesn't like to have or hear it's nationalistic ideology questioned. So of course he is marginalized and parodied as unpatriotic, stuck in black/white politics of 50 years ago, etc.
I watched his interview with Bill Moyers when it was on and I didn't find myself disagreeing with anything he said. Plus, almost everything he said I've heard Rob Bell say at one point or another in some form.
Kings kill prophets. Obama wants to be king, so he has to kill the prophet.
I admire him because he has balls and preaches what he believes.

interesting for sure. i really do believe that kings kill prophets. and i felt the same way about his interview with bill moyer.
i'm not so sure however, that obama has distanced himself from wright as much as the political powers of his party would have liked. unless he has issued more statements after his 'race' speech. he seems to be taking the stance that while he disagrees with wright's 'divisive' statements, he will not distance himself from a friend/pastor stand.
my thoughts anyway.
