the most important day of the week... BS

i was recently with a friend that i hadn't seen for quite some time. what incredible moments we have together. my friend makes me laugh more than most. he has a huge heart, a sharp mind, and a passion for humor. when our conversation turned in the direction of how we could do life together more and how we might be able to partner our kingdom ministries together for some weekends throughout the year, there was a solemness that came over the exchange. he explained to me that the worship leader where he is on staff (as a pastor with youth) had left and he had been asked by his 'senior' pastor to lead worship as well. he is no longer 'allowed' to travel on weekends because he would miss the sunday morning corporate worship gathering. "sunday is the most important day of the week" was what he was told.

really? it is? that's found where in the scriptures? everyday isn't sacred? or is it that sunday is 'more sacred' than other days? if our goal is to 'attract' more and more to attend our 'services'...then i can see the thought process here. if we don't put on our best 'show'...have our best 'musicians', then how will we continue to attract and sustain the attraction so that our attendance will increase? the problem i have with this mentality is that i believe this is an unhealthy imbalance in our lives.

if we put all of our resources into one day...and declare it the most important day of the week...then imbalance impedes our ability to pour our lives into the lives of others throughout the week. and to receive the lives of others being poured into us. instead of the the triune God and others forming us in relationship... we are formed by propositional music and teaching. i love teaching and i love music. but i do not want them to lose their place of balance in my life. i want to be formed by others...and to form others.

and when do we 'go into all the world and make disciples'? when do we live with those who are not of faith? when do we be Jesus to those in need? when do we feed the hungry? clothe the needy? when do we live as Jesus has deomonstrated for us if we are pouring all of our energy into one day? corporate worship is extremely important to me. but sunday is not the most important day of my week...everyday is.
