10:20:30 virus

rick meigs has tagged me with th 10:20:30 virus. i never forward emails. ever. i don't forward text messages, even though i'm told i'm cursed or don't love humanity or god if i don't. but the thing about tags that forces me to participate is that you get to know more about people because of them. this particular tag is about remembering and sharing where you (or in this case me) were 10 years, 20 years, and 30 years ago.

10 years ago...i was in the process of selling everything and leaving kansas city in order to keep any semblance of life that i had. i was addicted to cocaine and alcohol, and was smoking 4 packs a day. i had very few real friends left there...bill, heidi, miguel...and had too many overdose experiences. i moved back in with my parents at the age of 25 and lived with them for a year and a half. i didn't tell anyone about my addictions at the time. it would be another few years before i would realize that the real problems lay deep within.

20 years ago...i had just had a life changing encounter with god. one that made everyone around me think i had lost my mind. yet, the undeniable authenticity of that encounter would serve as an anchor point in my story that would see me through much confusion and the aforementioned train wreck that i would choose to become. for the first time in my life i knew there was a deeper meaning to the word love than my culture had tought me.

30 years ago...i went to see star wars at the drive in. my parents were both spoiling me with unconditional love. i lived on 3 acres of woods and lawn, free for the next 12 years to run, climb, build, motocross and imagine my days away in the wild. we didn't really have neighbors because we were so far from town. i was shy and i was secure. my story would forever be shaped by 2 parents who weren't bashful about expressing their deep love for me and who are still doing so today.

ps. january my wife and i will be having our own child and we've already begun loving on her.
(17 years ago, me on right with good friend jim)
