'life in uganda'

a former student of mine, Sarah Wineland, who has become a good friend is spending this semester in Africa. She's living in Mbale, Uganda, and working for CURE International Children's Hospital for her undergrad social work practicum. I would love to explain what she's doing, but you can read all about it on her new blog. Suffice it to say, Uganda is a different world than the world I know here on the Northern Neck in Virginia. Reading her blog at times wakes me up to the fact that creation is groaning for redemption, justice, and restoration. This portion of her latest entry brings the stark reality into my living room.

A baby died Monday night...They took him to the morgue and had him embalmed and then his mother had to travel back with the body. Wrapped and in her suitcase. On public transportation. Rebecca, one of the social workers, told me this, and of course I was shocked. “This is Uganda, Sarah,” she said. “It happens all the time. It’s just life.”

i've only been with a dead infant once (a blog entry lost with the crash of my previous pc). i can't imagine experiencing this on a daily basis. my heart rips in so many directions and i'm embarrassed that im not affected more by the report from my friend.

pray for these babies. pray for sarah as she makes a difference.

if you have the chance, comment on her page. pray for her. tell her you're praying for her. even if you don't know her, just drop my name:)
